Introductory Stone Carving Weekend
March 22-23 Two full days of hand carving technique and stone carving lore introduce the beginner to reductive art-making and three-dimensional thinking. Use of the Studio’s tools and a moderate piece of Vermont marble are included in the fee. Discussions of safe studio practices and stone and tool sourcing help make this two-day course an excellent initiation to the craft of stone sculpture. Fee: $225 • Instructor: Bill Nutt From Inspiration to Realization Thursday Evening Workshop, April 3 - May 15 A visionary approach to making art, using all materials— paper, canvas, paint, sculptural materials, found objects, collage, etc. As artists we are inspired continually by the world around us and by all we imagine. This workshop presents an opportunity to move with purpose from our inspirations and ideas to completed works of art. Each participant will focus on a discovery of his/her individual process. We will experiment with ways of bringing structure, depth and body to our initial impulses. We glean from a variety of resources such as the imagery in poetry, in our dreams, in our own writing and sketchbooks, and in the rich world of our experience. The goal is to enhance and expand our artistry, to create meaningful works of art that align with all we wish to create and express as artists. (Class scheduled for six weeks, skips May 1st; hours: 6 – 9 pm). Fee: $275 • Instructor: Fran Bull Architectural Carving Weekend April 26-27 Architectural carving is the creation of formalized decorative motifs (including letters) and moldings in stone. Stone Carving
June 9-13 In this workshop participants will learn the fundamentals of gas, arc, and MIG welding, oxy-fuel cutting, bending, and forging, and surface treatments of steel. Participants will acquire a working technique of welding that can be immediately applied to art making. Additionally, an ongoing discussion of the history of sculpture and the origins of welded sculpture will inform the class and serve as a point of departure. Participants will investigate a range of contemporary sculptural concepts, from the individual objects to installation, site-specific work, and public sculpture. The class will take advantage of the environment the Carving Studio and Sculpture Center offers - its large resource of scrap steel, and the open-air studio to work freely in various sizes. While experimentation and collaboration will be encouraged, the objective of the five-day course is to enable the participant to confidently execute basic welding techniques to construct sculptural objects. Fee: $625 • Instructor: Wendy Klemperer Garden Sculpture: An Installation in the Personal Environment June 9-13 A week long, mixed-media installation workshop will commence Monday morning with a group discussion on contemporary environmental works and their relationships to personal garden spaces. Participants will learn through a process of observing nature, sharing ideas for their own garden, considering themes, placement, pathways, other existing objects and designed areas. Using stone as the basis for this workshop, other relevant materials can augment these to emphasize the personalized creative energy of the work and the space for which it is being designed. Students are asked to bring descriptive images/photos of their full property. Also, select at least two or more areas, with several views of each, that are considered potential sites for placing a work of art. Fee: $575 • Instructor: Bart Uchida Carving the Figure from Imagination June 16-20 Imagine a dancer or a seated figure made from marble. How do you begin? Photograph the subject? Sketch on paper? Model in clay? Find a stone the right shape? All of these methods can be used to envision the finished sculpture. In this five-day workshop, however, participants will start by carving away “excess” stone to reveal a knee, an eye, a hip or… Each feature leads to its counterpart- two eyes, two knees, two hips, etc..until the whole figure is visible. The form in stone and all the skills required to go from raw block to finished surface will be explored. This includes hand and power tools combined with a variety of techniques to transfer from model or sketch into stone. All levels are welcome. Fee: $575 • Instructor: Willard Hall Mold Making June 16-20 Developing the ability to produce multiples from a mold can be a playful and adventurous approach to art making. This workshop will be a hands-on experience for creative individuals to develop skills for reproduction from original three-dimensional artwork. Participants will be guided through the process of mold making, including the creation of waste molds and techniques in casting. The complete four-step traditional progression from sculpture to finished reproduction will be augmented by accumulated wisdom from a master craftsman. All molds will be produced from clay originals created during the workshop week. Fee: $575 • Instructor: Luciano Caruso Books that Speak June 21 One-of-a-kind artist’s books can be created through assemblage. Exploration of various structures will lead participants to communicate ideas and information through non-printed books. A narrative unfolds through a combination of materials, formats and bindings. Participants are encouraged to consider and bring personal objects (photographs, beads, etc.) that can be incorporated into the visual vocabulary. Fee: $175 • Instructor: Carolyn Shattuck Soft Stone Carving June 21-22 Two days of hand stone carving exploring the wonders and colors of alabaster by creating an artistic sculpture expression. Fee: $275 • Instructor: Robert Babcock Sculpture in Stone June 23-27 Participants will explore and practice different approaches to working, carving and composing with marble and granite. Daily discussions and slide presentations dealing with the abstract in sculpture and its relationship to the environment will be the focus of this workshop. The idea or concept shapes the stone and the environment by means of the technical effort, which can best facilitate the making of a sculpture. Fee: $575 • Instructor: Carlos Dorrien Copper Smithing and the Fine Art Object June 23-27 Copper Smithing teaches the fundamentals of working on small art objects in non-ferrous metals. The instruction includes various methods of forming, fastening and finishing. Basic soldering techniques and combining of other materials, including found objects and raw materials, will be covered. Participants will come away from this class with a solid grounding from which to continue their individual creation. Fee: $625 • Instructor: Mathieu Poster Vermont Slate Relief Carving June 27-29 Slate is often overlooked as a potential carving material due to its association with more utilitarian uses such as roofing, tile or – going back a few years – blackboards. In fact, slate has a wonderful tight grain that accepts fine detail and can be worked up to a matte shine. Its softness allows ease of carving with standard fire-sharpened steel hand tools and very quickly with carbide air-powered ones. The flat nature and horizontal bedding of slate makes it an ideal media for relief carvings- think what the Egyptians did with incised line and shallow cutting! The workshop will concentrate on proper tool usage, a brief tool-making demonstration, lettering and techniques for translating a drawing onto stone. Open to all skill-levels. Please bring sketches. This workshop begins Friday morning and runs through the weekend. Fee: $375 • Instructor: Frank Anjo Three-Day Warm Glass June 27-29 Students learn technical and practical methods used to manipulate glass into objects of their own design. The course begins with the basic process of fusing glass together followed by methods of slumping and frit casting. The course is beneficial to those wishing to acquire skill in this area for the first time and to those already familiar with the basics. Fee: $375 • Instructor: James Durrett Architectural Carving June 30- July 4 Architectural detail determines how a building is perceived and gives clues to the designer’s intent at the time of dedication. We will concentrate on classical ornamentation with emphasis on design, laying out and carving. This will include a variety of moldings; a logarithmic spiral for scrolled brackets or Ionic volutes; and Corinthian capital design. Individual designs are welcome and actively encouraged. The stone we will be working with is Indiana limestone, a neutral grain and light-colored sedimentary stone. Fee: $575 • Instructor: Frank Anjo Lime Plaster Surfaces June 30-July 4 Learn the techniques of applying authentic Italian lime plaster, imported directly from the finest quarries in Italy! 100% Authentic Natural Lime Plaster has been used to protect and beautify surfaces since the time of the Sumerians. This age old product is the perfect solution for today’s pollutant free surface treatments- totally natural and a joy to apply. Never any sanding, the product can be burnished to a mirrored marble shine with a light stroke of the trowel. Participants will produce sample boards of 9 different finishes and effects, from fine Venetian finishes to rough and rustic distressed surfaces. A must-have introductory class for the decorative design professional and novice, alike. Fee: $875 plus $250 materials fee • Instructor: Robin Carter Stone Figure Carving July 7-11 Through the ages and most cultures the human figure has been the most consistent source of sculptural inspiration the world has ever known. It has been used to convey physical and moral virtues, emotional depth and as a carrier of myth and history. We will explore the form in stone and the skills required to go from raw block to finished surface. This includes hand and power tools combined with a variety of techniques to transfer from model or sketch into stone. All levels are welcome, just bring along a well-developed idea of what you would like to work on. Fee: $575 • Instructor: Frank Anjo The Figure in Clay July 7-11 The figure in clay may serve as a departure point for carving or a finished model to be fired or cast in other materials. Ms. Gowell shares her experience as a professional sculptor through frequent discussions and critiques, with an emphasis on modeling technique. Life models are used throughout the course to aid in the teaching of proportion and basic anatomy. Both gestural sketches and more analytical studies are produced in relief and three-dimensional figure modeling. Fee: $625 • Instructor: Christopher Gowell Bronze Casting July 7-11 Learn about the wonderful world of molten bronze. Participants will produce three bronzes using a different method for each. Techniques demonstrated will be: Lost wax - make your own wax original the first day of class, to be cast in ceramic shell. Green sand casting - each participant will make a 3”x5” plaque, to be cast using cope and drag green sand casting. Experimental resin-bonded sand - cutting, drilling and gluing sections of bonded sand together, then casting the negative spaces, resulting in a unique assortment of unknown forms and shapes. In keeping with tradition, the workshop will culminate with a blast from the shop cannon! Fee: $625 • Instructor: Glenn Campbell Granite Sculpture July 14-18 Learn how to carve granite or enhance technical skills for carving this stone. Through group demonstrations & individualized attention, students will explore their own forms & share the conceptual basis for each work through class discussions. Splitting, blocking the form, surface awareness & finishing techniques are essential hands-on learning for this durable outdoor material. Shared evening experiences will be used to broaden one’s awareness of contemporary issues surrounding the world of sculpture through slide presentations, readings and open discussions. Fee: $625 • Instructor: Gary Haven Smith Soft Stone Sculpture July 14-18 A week long, soft stone carving workshop for beginners to explore the wonders and colors of alabaster or other easy to carve stones, creating an artistic sculptural expression. Learn how to use basic hand tools for creative design. Instruction in direct and indirect carving, modeling, stone selection, tools, safety, sculpturing techniques, finishing and mounting. Instructor and peer critique and dialogue. An excellent introduction to the world of stone carving by an instructor with over 40 years experience. Use of tools and a moderate piece of stone are included in the fee. Fee: $575 • Instructor: Robert Babcock Three-Dimensional Mosaics July 14-18 Fantastic figures come to life through a unique method of construction, finished with traditional and contemporary mosaic techniques. Thin-shell cement, used with new age materials such as foam insulation and fiberglass fabric, forms lightweight yet rigid and durable structures. Embellishment will follow fabrication, using various types of tiles made from ceramics, metals, stone and other natural and synthetic materials. Surface coatings including paints, pigments, bronzing, etc. will also enhance the finished sculptures. Participants are welcome to bring their own materials for use in ornamentation. Fee: $595 • Instructor: Roger Evans Narrative Relief Carving in Stone July 21-25 Relief carving offers the sculptor opportunities to combine elements of drawing with sculpture, i.e. to create illusionistic space while also working with actual three-dimensional form. Relief carvings by participants will be based in story- whether imagery is based on the single figure or form, a dialogue of figure and space or a purely narrative relief pattern. This workshop will explore the essential subtractive methods of carving stone by employing traditional and contemporary carving tools. Mass & space relationships, volume, surface plane & spatial transitions and textural variety will be among the elements of sculptural form discussed and applied to study. This workshop is open to all levels of skill. Fee: $575 • Instructor: Jim Zingarelli Introduction to Cold Cast Sculpture July 21-25 The variety of techniques and media available to today’s sculptor makes the range of possibilities for mold making and casting an exciting adventure. This workshop will explore everything from the most traditional technique of relief casting with plaster to the more sophisticated process of building two-part rubber molds for works in the round. With the flexible mold, we are able to realize complex forms that would not be possible with the rigid mold, and these new materials lend themselves to the further production of “multiples.” Multiples enable us to make variations on an original or in a repeated installation. Plaster is the most traditional and efficient way to instant gratification but we will also experiment with a range of non-traditional materials and add-mixes to create our own customized casting compound that can be finished in various patina effects. Fee: $575 • Instructor: Lars-Erik Fisk Wood Sculpture July 21-25 The possibilities of wood sculpture are endless. Carve a single form from a log, or build out into space by carving joints or laminating. Select an interesting piece of wood and envision the form, following its natural curves and twists. Develop three-dimensional sculpture by establishing the planes of large forms, and adding the smaller details. Finish the sculpture by adding textures with chisel or chainsaw. Split off sections, burn areas, or sand to a smooth finish. Add color with paint, stains, or dyes. Experiment with different types of protective finishes such as oil, shellac, varnish, and lacquer. Emphasizing safety practices, demonstrations will simplify sharpening techniques to maintain chisels. Whether rough-hewn, or finished to a glossy shine, wood is an easily worked medium with which creative ideas can be explored. Fee: $575 • Instructor: Mark Carroll Open Stone Symposium July 26-August 1 Join us for seven days of carving in the heart of the historic West Rutland Marble quarries. Often called “carving camp” by participants, the symposium provides a supportive community for exploring both hard and soft stone. Native Vermont marble and granite, as well as some imported stone, is available. The core of the symposium is long, concentrated work hours with the resources of expert professional sculptors who offer a wide range of aesthetic and technical skills. In addition to frequent demonstrations, they will be available for individualized consultations on your work. The symposium provides forklifts and tools in order to facilitate creating sculpture from moderate size to monumental. All of the Sculptor Facilitators work with stone in innovative ways and have a combined expertise to share. Communal evening meals and slide presentations complete the working day. Fee: $725 • Facilitator: Eric David Laxman with B. Amore, and other visiting artists. Painting Techniques: Transparent and Opaque July 28 - August 1 The principles underlying watercolor painting are fundamental to an understanding of all methods of painting. This intensive five-day workshop will demystify watercolor painting in all its aspects- from the idea of color washes, color itself and color layering to an understanding of such principles as saturation, color value, modeling form through color, mixing (creating new) colors, and not least, drawing. Participants will then apply what they have learned to the somewhat different set of problems posed by opaque media (acrylic and oil). With this information and practice, the artist can set aside concerns regarding these techniques and utilize them with skill and ease toward his or her visual expression. Fee: $595 • Instructor: Fran Bull Introductory Stone Carving August 2-3 Two full days of hand carving technique and stone carving lore introduce the beginner to reductive art making and three-dimensional thinking. Use of the Studio’s tools and a moderate piece of Vermont marble are included in the fee. Discussions of safe studio practices and stone and tool sourcing help make this two-day course an excellent initiation to the craft of stone sculpture. Fee: $225 • Instructor: Ryder Owens Direct Stone Carving August 4-8 Learn the art of stone carving from hand chiseling to finishing with optional polishing; as well as the use of form, volume and texture to produce desired effects. Explore the direct carving method of releasing the form the artist sees from within the stone. Imagery may include figurative or abstract subject matter, depending on individual preference. We will work in limestone or marble. Open to all levels. Fee: $575 • Instructor: Nora Valdez Steel Sculpture August 4-8 Do you think of steel as an unyielding industrial material? Does it make you think of I-beams and re-bar? In this five-day session we approach steel as a malleable substance that takes the form of your every idea with ease. You learn how control the flame and weld of an oxy-acetylene torch to make small solid-steel sculptures. Larger works become possible as you hammer out sheet steel and weld it together to create hollow-core volumes. Finally, as you grind and sand the surface, your sculpture transcends the history of its own making and becomes an autonomous, unified whole. Fee: $625 • Instructor: Torin Porter Papier-Mâché Sculpture August 11-15 The instructor will teach her personal methods of structure-building to support papier-mâché. With traditional papier-mâché as a goal, the participants will learn a variety of ways to create armatures and underlying supports for forming strong, durable 3-D objects out of paper. We will learn about paper selection, glues and surface treatments. Multiple techniques will be demonstrated. Fee: $575 • Instructor: Joan Curtis |
