"In Flanders Fields" Exhibit by Fran Bull- November 20, 2009-March 28, 2010
Fran Bull's recent artwork explores the barbarism of war through an installation of sculpture and etching in nine parts. Drawing on cultural memories of World War I, “In Flanders Fields,” at the Carving Studio and Sculpture Center Gallery, November 20, 2009-March 28, 2010, reminds the viewer of commonalities and differences in past and present human conflict. There will be an opening reception, with an opportunity to meet the artist, on Friday, November 20th from 5 to 7 PM.
“In Flanders Fields” is Fran Bull's attempt to add her "silent scream" to the human chorus of those for whom war is anathema. She explains, “It is a meditation on the fact that we, as whole countries, as societies, as small bands linked by shared hatreds and as human beings with our pitifully short lives given the privilege of inhabiting this magnificent planet--continue to turn to warfare, mired in the delusion that we are thereby solving our human dilemmas.”
Fran Bull’s art has been shown worldwide for over 25 years. She studied painting at Bennington College and in 1980 she earned an M.A. degree from New York University in Art and Art Education. In the mid 1990’s Bull expanded her creative focus by exploring other media, including performance art, sculpture, mixed media, printmaking and set design. Fran Bull lives and works in Brandon, Vermont where she runs Gallery in-the Field, presenting the work of provocative, innovative living artists. For more on Fran Bull and her work, please visit her website- www.franbull.com.
The Carving Studio and Sculpture Center will host a Lunchtime Gallery Talk by Fran Bull at noon on Thursday, December 10th. For more information, please contact the Carving Studio and Sculpture Center by telephone at (802) 438-2097 or email to info@carvingstudio.org.

SculptFest09
CSSC's annual outdoor exhibit will feature up to 10 installations on the grounds of the Carving Studio & Sculpture Center. This year's theme, "Figure/Ground: the object in situ" will be curated by artist Fran Bull.
This project is an investigation or inquiry into the relation of sculpture and environment. Inasmuch as the artist construes not just the made piece but includes and considers the fact that, unlike in painting where ground and figure are considered equally in the making of the art, the ground (or background) in sculpture is often a kind of given, or left up to chance as the piece is carried from place to place.
Proposals should include a project description on one or two pages, sketches or other visual representations, resume, optional statement and up to ten images portraying previous site-specific work. Please contact CSSC for more information.

Anne Tait “Memento Vitae” Exhibition- September 12-October 25, 2009
Anne Tait's artwork straddles areas of historic preservation, art history and fine arts. “Memento Vitae: The Humanity of the Marble Headstone,” at the Carving Studio and Sculpture Center Gallery, September 12-October 25, 2009, offers insight into the processes that Tait uses to approach her art making. There will be an opening reception, with an opportunity to meet the artist, on Saturday, September 12th from 4 to 6 PM.
Anne Tait executes her fine-arts work predominately in the area of printmaking, with photography research, drawing and painting serving the ultimate print. The multi-faceted approach she uses to arrive at her final product results in both scholarly accomplishments and pieces of art. Through past sources and empirical observations of memorial art, this exhibition reveals the importance of vernacular artwork in the marble headstones of the 19th century as a means to better understand our place in history. For more on Anne Tait and her work, please visit her website- www.mementovitae.com.
Beginning at 5 PM on September 12th the Carving Studio and Sculpture Center will host the opening of SculptFest09 at the main building and grounds featuring live music, refreshments, Fine Art and Vacation Raffle drawing and more. For more information, please contact the Carving Studio and Sculpture Center by telephone at (802) 438-2097 or email to info@carvingstudio.org.
