2011 Stone Bench Project

In 2009 and 2010, the support of the business community and the Vermont Arts Council helped to provide area students with the opportunity to participate in the Stone Bench Project.  In these two-week intensive sessions, ten Rutland County youth worked collaboratively under the direction of a master sculptor to create carved stone benches for placement at the West Rutland Town Hall and Giorgetti Park in Rutland.

Call to Artists

The Carving Studio and Sculpture Center (CSSC) is now accepting proposals for Sculptfest 2011, Forces of Nature. The curator, artist Rick Rothrock, will select 10 artists to create outdoor installations responsive to the post-industrial marble-quarrying environment where CSSC is located. The selected pieces will go on display September 10, 2011. Artists are invited to submit proposals to include a 1–2-page project description, sketches or other visual representations, a résumé, an artist statement (optional), up to 10 images of previous site-specific work (.jpg format on CD), and a SASE for the return of materials, if desired. The application deadline is July 22, 2011. Submissions should be addressed to SculptFest 2011, Carving Studio and Sculpture Center, PO Box 495, West Rutland, VT 05777. For inquiries, contact 802/438-2097 or <info@carvingstudio.org>. Artists are encouraged to see themselves and their work as a force of nature and to interpret the subject as they understand it.
